On the evening of July 27, 2005, a severe thunderstorm moved through south Dayton leaving two businesses completely destroyed by fire from a lightning strike. Behind Them: Doc, Bill Hunt, the Chief Federal Probation officer for Tennessee was in Dayton on June 6th, 1978 to inspect the Rhea County Jail after federal judges in both Knoxville and Chattanooga had received complaints from a prisoner being held at the facility. Its county seat is Dayton.Rhea County comprises the Dayton, TN Micropolitan Statistical Area, which is also included in the Chattanooga-Cleveland-Dalton, TN-GA-AL Combined Statistical Area.
